FAQs: Toll-Free Phone Numbers
Read on to learn the answers to common questions about toll-free phone numbers, or contact Tresta for more information.
What is a toll-free number?
Toll-free numbers are phone numbers that the caller can dial at no charge. As such, it’s common for businesses to offer a toll-free option so customers have a free, convenient way to reach you. Toll-free numbers are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis through toll-free service providers like Tresta.
What are the different toll free prefixes?
Toll-free numbers are available in 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844 and 833 prefixes. Tresta offers toll-free numbers in every prefix listed.
Is there any difference between the toll free prefixes?
All toll-free prefixes (800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844 and 833) work the same way. However, since the 800 prefix has been around the longest, it is the most recognizable—and the most picked over. More prefixes have been added to keep up with the demand for toll-free numbers, so there are still plenty of great options out there, no matter which prefix you choose to use.
Can you call a toll-free number from another country?
US toll-free numbers can be called for free from Canada and Mexico, but they cannot be called from other countries throughout the world.
Does Tresta charge based on minutes or number of calls?
No! Toll-free numbers from Tresta are priced per user, per month—not based on usage. Use your toll-free number as much as you want (and take advantage of every single feature) at no additional cost.
Can I transfer an existing 800 number to Tresta (or out of Tresta)?
Absolutely! According to FCC rules, all toll-free numbers must be portable. You can bring your existing toll-free number to Tresta, and you can take your number with you if you ever change service providers.
